PS- Dell Studio XPS, Windows 7 64-bit, all of the latest software updates installed. Help! I've fallen, and I can't get up! What do I do? Plus, it's a Dell Computer, and I understand that you can't do a repair install with an OEM disk. Since some of the problems seem unrelated to Windows 7, I doubt a "repair install" would be helpful. I've never had this many separate and apparently unrelated problems pop up at one time. There was only one restoration point, and that was today when I tried to remove and reinstall iTunes. (It's been hours, and it's not even close to finishing).įinally, when I tried to do a system restore, all previous restoration points were gone. I had to start in "safe" mode to remove Windows Defender and reinstall MSE. Because I understand that Windows Defender is subsumed in MSE, I had removed it from the computer. In what may or may not be related, Microsoft Security Essentials was disabled, and Windows Defender was on. I would have to do a hard reset to turn off the computer or restart. When I would try to shut down, it would hang on the "logging off" screen. In addition, certain programs simply would not launch, in particular, iTunes. Eventually I would get a message in the title bar of the window that the application was "not responding." No other error messages. Last night, fairly suddenly, Windows Explorer started "hanging." I would click on a file, and Explorer would do nothing. Hi, I'm new to the forum and will be grateful for any help anyone can offer.
